Mayor gives update on Fair Park Lake situation

RESIDENTS ASKED TO NOT FISH OUT OF LAKE

Childress City Mayor Cary Preston has issued the following update on the Fair Park Lake situation:

Thursday morning at 7 AM the City began implementing these suggestions from the state biologist:

1. Test water oxygen level. We will have immediate results from that test.

2. Toxicity test. These results will have to be taken to Wichita Falls and could take up to a few days to have answers back. Additionally we will be pumping water out of the lake and back into the lake to help with oxygen levels. Will be placing air raider in the lake and it will be running constantly.

Once we receive the answer on the test for toxicity, the City will begin removing fish.

The State biologist believes that the calls of this issue is from the lake turning over. With our recent rains and cooler days then turning to temperatures above 100 that has been consistent over the past week or so this is what is causing the issue.

The City of Childress is asking our residents to not fish or catch fish from our Fair Park Lake out of abundance of caution until we receive our toxicity test back. I will post updated as soon as I receive them.

update on oxygen level in the Fair Park LakE: City of Childress has received the results back from the oxygen level in the lake, it is 0.02. We would like to see levels of 0.05 or higher. The City is working on getting oxygen levels where they need to be.
