Spotlight on JCMH General Surgery Associates

Jackson County Memorial Hospital of Altus surgeons Dr. Richard Katseres, who has practiced surgery at JCMH since 1996, and Dr. Stan Sherman, who began at JCMH in 2018, cover a wide geographical area as well as a wide variety of general surgical procedures.

The team includes Office Manager Denise McCuistion, LPNs Tony Gonzalez, and Sandra Wohlford, Lisa Ratley, Scribe, and Diane Cantu, Receptionist located at 101 South Park Lane.

McCuistion sees both sides of the practice in the clinic and says, “We do a lot of in-office procedures – surgery covers a lot of bases, not just big ones that are hospital events. We remove cysts, lesions, do biopsies, and remove ingrown toenails. You don’t need a referral for some procedures, call us and the office staff will guide you through the steps you need to take.”

Some procedures are routine – colonoscopies, EGDs, hysterectomies, and tonsillectomies, but the clinic also specializes in surgeries for lung cases such as lobectomy and biopsies.

Dr. Katseres is Fellowship trained in Surgical Breast Oncology. Wohlford, his nurse for the last 18 years says, “he can help treat all kinds of breast diseases. He does the biopsies, lymph node biopsies, mastectomies, and deals with breast cancers. He is very good to determine the plan of care for what you need for your specific issue. Many times, patients hear the word cancer and immediately think of chemotherapy. That isn’t always the case. If you have a new diagnosis of breast cancer, Dr. Katseres is a great first step. He stays in the room with the patients until he answers every question they have, and explains all the options and steps. We are so lucky to have someone with that level of expertise in this area.”

Dr. Sherman began at JCMH in 2018. He explains what drew him to a surgery practice and his philosophy, “I am a fixer, I like to fix things. There are a lot of illnesses that without surgery will drag on and continue to cause problems. With some surgeries, people can move on and recover. I only offer patients a surgical procedure if I think it will help them to be better off than they were before.”

Both Katseres and Sherman do breast cancer surgeries, and also lots of gastrointestinal procedures such as gallbladders and appendix, and skin cancer grafts. Other surgeries include laparoscopic and open hernia repairs and colon surgeries, as well as hemorrhoidectomies and hemorrhoid banding and port placement and removals.
