It was a rainy night for the Altus Bulldogs homecoming conference game against the Elgin Owls Friday, Oct. 7. Altus lost a hard-fought game at home with a final score of 34-0.
Early in the 1st quarter Elgin made it up to the 21-yard line, handed off the ball, but was taken down by the Bulldogs at the 5-yard line. The Owls then made the 5-yard touchdown starting the score of the game at 0-6, and with a botched snap, the score stayed at 0-6.
Although the Owls came out strong, the Bulldog defense continued to hold them off until there was just 2:55 left in the 1st quarter. Even though the Bulldogs stopped an Elgin pass at the 8-yard line, the Owls were able to make another touchdown, and with the extra 2-points, the score was 0-14 at the end of the quarter.
The first big play of the 2nd quarter saw the Bulldogs stop a touchdown run by the Owls at the 23-yard line, but they came back at the 8 for a touchdown run, and with the extra point, it took the score to 0-21 for the Owls who came into the game sitting at 5-0.
It looked like the Owls would make another touchdown by halftime, but the Bulldogs defense kept pushing them back, even after they got into the red zone.
With 7:00 left in the 3rd quarter, there was a deep pass by the Owls, but it was intercepted by Nathon De Los Santos at the 45-yard line, but Elgin regained possession of the ball. There was a missed tackle by the Bulldogs and Elgin ran in a 52-yard touchdown, and with a bad punt, the score was now 0-27.
The Elgin Owls earned another touchdown in the 4th quarter ending the game at 0-34 in the Owl’s favor.
The Altus Bulldogs play on Thursday, Oct. 13 next week against Duncan.
