Individuals interested in running as a candidate in the upcoming Board of Education of the Altus Public Schools may file to run as a candidate for available seats at the Jackson County Election Board. Seats open on the Altus Board of Education are the #2 and #3 seats. Those wishing to file can visit the Election Office between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM Monday, Dec. 5 through Wednesday, Dec. 7.
At the Monday, Oct. 10 regular monthly of the Altus School Board, it was voted to appoint Angela Coronado at Board Member to office #2.
The Primary Election will be held on Feb. 14, 2023, only if three or more candidates file for the positions scheduled to be on the ballot or for a Board of Education position appearing on the ballot as an unexpired term. A Board of Education General Election shall be held on April 4, 2023 under the following circumstances: if only two candidates file for a position scheduled to be on the ballot or for a position on the ballot for an unexpired term or if no candidate in the Board of Education Primary Election receives more than 50% of the votes cast.
Positions on the ballot will be for board position No. 3 which has a five-year term, and position No. 2 which has an unexpired term with 4 years remaining.
Qualifications of candidates for office include residing in the district for at least six months preceding the first day of the filing period, have been a registered voter registered with the county election board at an address located within the geographical boundaries of the district for six months preceding the first day of the filing period. They must also have at least a high school diploma or equivalency. Employees of the school district and their family members, and those that have been convicted of a felony, are not eligible to be a candidate.
To be eligible to vote, a voter must be registered with the county election board at an address within the geographical boundaries of the district.
