The Childress Bobcats basketball team is set to play in San Antonio for their first State tournament since 2015 Thursday, March 9. Before 2015, Childress hadn’t made it to state since 1944. Just making it this far is an outstanding accomplishment in itself, a feeling the coaching staff and players take pride in as they prepare for their journey to a potential championship contest.
Overall, the Bobcats are 27-7, and in District play 9-1. Childress won their neutral playoff game against Brock and won 56-55 on March 4, and before that, won their home playoff game against City View (Wichita Falls, TX) by a score of 62-49.
The Bobcats are set to play Lytle (34-6) at 3 PM Thursday. The Pirates come into the contest winners of their last 18 contest, eclipsing the 100-point mark four times during that stretch.
Tip-off times for every state semifinals match up and state title game in the Texas high school basketball playoffs at the 2023 UIL Boys Basketball State Tournament are from Thursday, March 9 to Saturday, March 11 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The feeling amongst the Bobcats team is that there’s no sense in going all the way down to San Antonio and not coming home with a few victories.
Childress coach Wayne Parker was quoted as saying, “They’ve just had the mentality of, ‘We made it here, we may as well go win it. You never know when you’re going to get back to state. These guys are excited, the community and town are excited and we’re just looking forward to getting down there, playing our best basketball and seeing what we can do.”
