Childress Fire Department and Childress Main Street host 9/11 remembrance memorial

In remembrance of the lives lost and the bravery of first responders on September 11, 2001, the Childress Fire Department and Childress Main Street will host a memorial on Saturday, September 11. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the events of 9/11. While the remembrance memorial in Childress has only taken place for a few years, Fire Chief Daniel Tyler intends to keep it going so the memories of those affected by this tragedy will live on.

The day will begin with moments of silence at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m. and 10:03 a.m., the times that each of the four hijacked planes crashed.

Later that evening, the Childress Firefighters will participate in Project Stair Climb at 7:30 p.m. at Charlie Johnson Field in Fair Park Stadium. The firefighters will climb 1908 stairs at the stadium in remembrance of the steps the firefighters took on September 11, 2001. Community members are encouraged to come walk the track and hear from local pastors while Project Stair Climb is occurring. Donations will be accepted for the fire department that night.

Another opportunity to donate to the Childress Fire Department will be held the day prior, Friday, September 10, as the fire department will host a hamburger cookout at Armstrong Park by the 501 Engine from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. or when the food runs out. The firefighters will do the cooking and all proceeds will benefit them. The meal includes a hamburger, chips, dessert and water for $10. To go boxes will be available but those stopping by are welcome to eat at the park and gather with other community members.
