WELLINGTON —Collingsworth County Commissioners Court and Judge John James had the task of redrawing precinct lines to even out the number of voters in each due to shifts in the population.
James explained that since the population of the county changed more than 10%, from 2010 to 2020, the precinct boundaries had to be assessed and redrawn. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau revealed that the population of Collingsworth County in 2010 was 3057. The 2020 count is 2,652, a drop of almost 11%.
“We have to have about the same amount of people in every district,” said John James, county judge. “Divided into four commissioner court precincts, we had to move some lines in town and out in the country too, in precincts one and three.”
Since the U.S. Constitution prohibits large population differences across precincts, local commissioners proceeded with the redistricting. Voters should check recently mailed registration cards to confirm their precinct as they may have changed.
