A gigantic new sign is greeting Altus visitors and residents as they drive into town from the east entrance. Financial donations totaling $97,725 were raised by local organizations to place the giant 12-foot high steel ALTUS sign on the north side of the city limits on Highway 62 near Altus Air Force Base. The big three-dimensional letters span 30-feet long. A second sign will be erected on the campus of Western Oklahoma State College, near the edge of Highway 283 to memorialize the Altus Rotary Club’s Centennial. A Rotary fund raising event was held in March for the sign which raised over $62,000 for the project. Rotary pledged $25,000 to match funds raised by the public.
