Road widening project along FM 268 in Childress and Hardeman Counties moving into next phase; Closed To Local Traffic Only

The $17.1 million widening project along FM 268 in Childress and Hardeman Counties is moving into the next phase with the closure of the roadway to local traffic only beginning on January 16.

According to Childress Area Engineer Matthew Herbstritt, P.E., a bridge in Hardeman County will be demolished on this date with the demolition of a bridge in Childress County to take place on January 25. The demolition of bridge class culverts will take place soon after.

“Local traffic will be able to get around each structure on work roads, with the exception of the Groesbeck Creek Bridge in Hardeman County,” stated Herbstritt. “Local traffic will need to utilize the signed detour on county roads at that location.”

Local traffic along FM 268 is reminded to use caution when traveling through the work zone. This includes obeying posted warnings and avoiding distractions in their vehicle. Traffic fines double when workers are present.

The project is expected to be complete in December of 2023.
