Widening project in Childress, Hardeman Counties to begin Nov. 17

CHILDRESS – The Childress District of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin a $17.1
million widening project on FM 268 in Childress and Hardeman Counties the week of November 17. Prime
contractor for the project is RK Hall. Expected completion date for the entire project is Summer of 2024,
although the contractor and TxDOT are working together to expedite the work schedule with the goal of an
early completion in Fall of 2023.
Before closing the road to local traffic only, which is expected to take place in January, the contractor will
begin working on culvert extensions.
“This project will provide multiple much-needed improvements to the FM 268 corridor, including the
widening and resurfacing of the pavement with hot mix and the replacement of seven bridge-class
structures with new wider, modern bridge structures,” stated Childress Area Engineer Matthew
Herbstritt, P.E.
“Additionally, several curves throughout the project are being re-constructed on new alignments
and improvements to lighting, signage, and pavement markings will also be made with the goal of
improving traffic safety. Once completed, FM 268 will have improved roadway and traffic safety
features, a more durable and resilient pavement structure, new bridges with better functionality,
and better ride quality,” ended Herbstritt.
Drivers are reminded to use caution when traveling through the work zones, which includes obeying posted
warnings and avoiding distractions in their vehicle. Traffic fines double when workers are present.
